A girl named Rose is riding her new bike near her home in Deadwood, South Dakota, when she falls through the earth. She wakes up at the bottom of a square hole, its walls glowing with intricate carvings. But the firemen who come to save her peer down upon something even stranger: a little girl in the palm of a giant metal hand.

There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bore children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.
For those fans of The Illuminae Files, here’s another series for you. Sleeping Giants is not as fast-paced as The Illuminae Files, but definitely as snarky and makes the reader feel utterly small in this big universe. It comes in the similar dossier style, making for a quick read.
A nameless inquisitor (a person I’d love to know much more about) conducts interviews with the main characters Rose, Kara, Vincent, and Ryan. The interviews walk us through the discovery of the first part of the robot, (which was ironically by Rose), through missions of discovering others, assembling the pieces, and figuring out how it works. The robot, being dated back thousands of years old, holds the key to unravel history as we know it.
The first half was rather tedious, as the stage needed to be well set for the rest of the plot to take place. As the plot unfolds, we quickly realize that there are several facets involved in the motivation behind finding the rest of what is later called Themis. Political intrigue, genocide, mythology, mathematics, Biblical stories, and mystery are all woven together in a plot to discover her origin. It is easy to see how greed for power and prowess can take over and corrupt a mission so quickly. In a world so small, with rather trivial issues, there is a foreboding feeling that something much bigger than ourselves is going to be revealed—whether mankind is ready for it, or not.
The cliffhanger, in the end, is utterly terrifying. I’m looking forward to Waking Gods to find out what happens next.
